The Tank's debut was in the arena of the battles of World War One. At first it seemed that they were an almost indestructible weapon. Of course, weapons were soon developed to counter the threat posed by the tank. Initially, these weapons were simply adaptations of existing armaments, but purpose built weapons were soon seen in action against the tanks. Tanks evolved and so the weapons required to fight them also had to improve. Higher powered weapons were developed to encounter thicker armour. Aircraft mounted Anti Tank weapons were being used with some success towards the end of World War Two. Simple lightweight guided missiles that fired from aircraft or ground positions were a development from the cold war period. Nowadays, an unlucky tank can be wiped out by a laser guided missile launched from many miles away. This guide is a summary of significant anti tank weaponry from the Battlefields of the Somme to the high tech campaigns of the present day. |
